BOND COAT 3
A reactive, solvent-free, cold applied Bond Coat
Description
BOND COAT 3 represents a major step forward in the provision of high performance heat-activated tack/bond coats, providing adhesion between the ELIMINATOR® bridge deck waterproofing membrane and a wide range of asphalt surfacing mix designs. It is based on GCP Applied Technologies’ unique ESSELAC® advanced resin technology and extensive experience in the development of high performance bond/tack coats.
Uses
BOND COAT 3 is applied on to the ELIMINATOR® membrane to provide a strong bond between the membrane and subsequent bituminous surfacing. It is suitable for use with most types of hot-applied bituminous road surfacing including those where the bitumen content in the surfacing specification is low and/or where the surfacing layer is thin1.
Features
- Suitable for a wide range of asphalt specifications including 'high stress' sites providing an excellent bond between ELIMINATOR® and asphalt pavements
- Exceeds the enhanced adhesion requirements as specified in Highways Agency IAN96/07 Rev. 1
- Approved for use with the Eliminator bridge deck waterproofing membrane by:
- EOTA – ETA No.15/0362, Liquid Applied Bridge Deck Waterproofing, ETAG 033
- British Board of Agreement (UK) - HAPAS Certificates No.11/H169, 11/H170, for Highways England road bridges
- Pigmented for ease and efficiency of application
- Cold-applied – faster to apply and no hot works permits required
- Rapid cure – surfacing works can commence one hour after application
- Tack free finish; easily cleaned and resistant to tyre pick-up and damage from trafficking
- High bond values allow a reduction in asphalt thickness reducing carbon emissions during manufacture, transportation and laying
- Reduced asphalt thickness can extend the life of the bridge by reducing the dead load

Surface Preparation
BOND COAT 3 is applied to the cured ELIMINATOR® membrane. This must be clean, dry and free from contamination. A unique feature of this bond coat is that adhesion tests can done to confirm whether cleaning of the membrane is necessary to achieve sufficient bond.
Application
BOND COAT 3 is a two-component system mixed on-site, comprising a resin component and a liquid BPO catalyst.
Immediately before use stir the BOND COAT 3 resin thoroughly using a mechanical mixer, such as an air-driven drill (400 – 800 rpm) or intrinsically safe electric drill with mixing paddle.
Add the required amount of catalyst and mix for 30 seconds.
Once mixed, BOND COAT 3 can be applied using either a notched squeegee and roller or suitable airless spray equipment2.
BOND COAT 3 cures to a hard, dirt-repellent coating. The cure time is dependent on site conditions but is typically within 60 minutes.
Application of the asphalt binder course can take place immediately after BOND COAT 3 has cured, or it can be temporarily delayed, allowing occasional construction vehicle traffic on the surface prior to paving.
BOND COAT 3 must be free of water, dust and other contaminants when the surfacing is applied.
The activation temperature of BOND COAT 3 is 90°C. Asphalt temperatures drop rapidly when placed onto a cold surface, so it is advisable to allow for this by achieving a minimum asphalt laying temperature of 130°C. The laying temperature is taken prior to rolling by placing a probe in the centre of the mat once screeded from the paver.
Coverage
Coverage rate is typically 0.6kg/m2. Due to the wide range of asphalt mix designs that may be specified, advice should be sought regarding the coverage rate from the Technical Surfacing Department. Packaging BOND COAT 3 is supplied in 5kg, 20kg and 190kg packs.
Storage
All components of the system should be stored in cool, dry, protected conditions, out of direct sunlight and in accordance with the relevant Health & Safety regulations. Storage temperatures must not exceed 25°C. Do not store near naked flames or foodstuffs.
Stored in unopened containers, under the correct conditions, the components have a minimum shelf life of twelve months. If your product is more than twelve months old, contact GCP before use.
