Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer
Description
ZED S94 is a single-component, anti-corrosive air-drying metal primer. A hand application grade is supplied as standard. It can also be applied by spray with the addition of Solvent No. 5. Contact Technical Services for more information.
Uses
ZED S94 is used on steel (including galvanised steel) and other metallic surfaces to enhance the bond between GCP’s ESSELAC® resin based systems and the metal substrate.
Approved for use with the Eliminator bridge deck waterproofing membrane by:
- OTA – ETA No.15/0362, Liquid Applied Bridge Deck Waterproofing, ETAG 033
- British Board of Agreement (UK) - HAPAS Certificates No.11/H169, 11/H170, for Highways England road bridges

Surface Preparation
All surface coating systems are dependent on the quality of surface preparation.
Steel
On steel surfaces all rust, dirt and contamination should be removed to expose bright metal to achieve a surface finish to comply with Swedish standard Sa 2.5. Prior to any blast cleaning the surface must be thoroughly degreased. Amplitude of the surface profile should not exceed 75 microns. Use non-reusable, non-metallic grit.
Mixing
Immediately before use, stir the primer resin thoroughly using a mechanical mixer, such as an air-driven drill (400 – 800 rpm) or intrinsically safe electric drill with mixing paddle.
To spray apply ZED S94 make the following additions of Solvent No. 5:

Application
Application should take place within three hours of grit blasting the substrate. The substrate must be clean and dry.
Apply evenly to the substrate by brush or roller. For spray application the product must be diluted. Ensure the necessary PPE is worn. The recommended spray equipment is a Graco 23:1 Monark airless spray pump with a ¼" spray line and a spray tip size between 0.025" (25 thou) and 0.035" (35 thou).
Do not allow the primer to ‘pond’ or ‘pool’. If it is spray applied, any excess material should be removed with a dry roller to prevent ponding. One application of ZED S94 is usually sufficient. Overcoating with Eliminator or other products is recommended to take place as soon as possible in order to minimise the risk of contamination.
Coverage
- Hand Grade – 0.2kg/m2
- Diluted to spray – 0.25kg/m2
Cleaning
All tools and equipment should be cleaned with acetone before the material is allowed to cure.
Packaging & Storage
ZED S94 - 5kg, 20kg & 200kg packs.
All components of the ZED S94 system should be stored in cool, dry, protected conditions, out of direct sunlight and in accordance with the relevant site Health & Safety regulations. Storage temperature must not exceed 25°C. Do not store near naked flames or foodstuffs.
Stored in unopened containers, under the correct conditions, the components have a minimum shelf life of twelve months. If your product is more than twelve months old you must contact GCP before use.
